New York New Jersey World Cup match could be hit by Monday night storms – NBC New York

This isn’t exactly the summer welcome we were expecting.

The severe storm that started in the tri-state area on Monday afternoon continued till evening. They pose the risk of flash flooding, damaging straight-line winds, and even an isolated tornado or two.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for the city and parts of the Jersey Shore before the evening rush began.

There will be a threat of severe storms during the World Cup soccer game at New York-New Jersey Stadium and the New York Mets baseball game later in the evening.

The highest risk of severe storms on Monday will be for the New York City metro area and all of New Jersey.

The threat of sporadic flash flooding prompted flood watches for the city and points to the west and south.

The good news: About an hour before game time, radar images showed that there was severe weather south of the NYC metro area, with heavy rain falling as well. Although the possibility of a shower or torrential rain could not be ruled out during the game, the risk of a storm seemed low.

Rainfall rates from some of the strongest storms can reach one to two inches of rain per hour. At that rate, urban flooding becomes a real issue. If you live in a basement apartment or plan to take the Metro this afternoon, please be weather-conscious and move to higher ground if heavy rain affects your neighborhood.

Overall, two to three inches of rain is possible from Monday’s storm.

Damaging straight-line winds will also be a main threat from Monday’s storms, primarily for Central and South Jersey, but isolated damaging wind gusts could also hit the Hudson Valley and Connecticut.

As far as tornadoes are concerned, the risk is low, but not zero. The tornado formation area included all of New Jersey and New York City. Discrete storm cells can develop rotation and produce one or two quick, spin-up tornadoes with winds in excess of 100 mph.

To make sure you know when a storm is coming, download the NBC New York app, go to Settings and turn on Severe Weather Alerts. This will let you know when a threat of flash flood, high winds or tornadoes is issued for your community.
