New Kindle features: Dark mode is coming to Kindle Colorsoft e-readers

For nighttime Kindle users, or perhaps those who have their phone set to dark mode all the time, a long-awaited feature is coming to Kindle ColorSoft e-readers. Dark mode is coming to ColorSoft devices in the coming weeks. This includes Kindle ColorSoft, ColorSoft Signature Edition, and Scribe ColorSoft.

Dark mode will also be customizable. For example, you can set your Home screen, Library, and Settings to dark mode but keep your notebook in light mode. Once Dark Mode is on your device, it will be available on your Kindle’s Quick Actions screen.

In addition to Dark Mode, Amazon is already rolling out Smart Shapes within notebooks on Kindle Scribes. Smart Shapes brings structured lines and shapes to your drawings on Kindle Scribe. This also means that when you draw freehand, your drawings will snap to creating straight lines.

Both features will be available to users around the world. Amazon did not provide a date for the rollout, instead saying the features “will be rolled out in the coming weeks.” The update requires the latest software update, which can be found here. If you own one of the Kindles that Amazon is prepping in May 2026, now might be a good time to upgrade.
