Microsoft is preparing to shut down a significant part of its Xbox division and reevaluate plans for its next-generation Project Helix console. It’s also apparently considering dramatically restructuring its relationship with Xbox, and hasn’t ruled out spinning it off into a separate company.
A new report from Information Suggests that Microsoft has considered some dramatic measures to make its Xbox units more durable. This includes the possibility of selling the business, turning it into a wholly owned subsidiary, joint venture, or even shutting it down altogether. The report doesn’t suggest anything is imminent, but it looks like new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella haven’t taken anything off the table when it comes to the future of Xbox.
Sharma has secured approval to invest heavily in tentpole titles like Halo and Fallout. The former has not seen any new releases since 2021, and was the last mainline Fallout title fallout 4 In 2015. However this investment in its most popular franchises is likely to come at the expense of smaller studios and games that have failed to meet sales expectations.
