Meta’s partially self-motivated quest pricing situation is particularly striking since the company recently changed its name and threw big bucks at its vision for a VR-based metaverse – saying it would form the basis of “the next version of the Internet.” It hasn’t panned out the way CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisioned five years ago, however, as $73 billion in cumulative losses could be confirmed for Meta’s VR-focused Reality Labs division.
But while Meta was more or less alone among big tech companies in making significant investments in the metaverse, it is just one of many companies throwing huge amounts of money into the AI revolution. And Meta’s spending on the metaverse over the years pales in comparison to what the company is spending on AI this year alone.
Still, with Meta reportedly planning to cut spending for its Metaverse division by up to 30 percent, it’s clear where the company’s focus lies for the immediate future. So when you look at the rising prices of VR headsets that now seem to be a weak part of the meta’s focus, just remember that the meta’s own constantly changing priorities are what helped get us to this point.
The new prices for the Meta Quest headset in the US are as follows:
- Quest 3S (128GB): $350 (was $300, up 16.7 percent)
- Quest 3S (256GB): $450 (was $400, up 12.5 percent)
- Quest 3 (512GB): $600 (was $500, up 20 percent)
