The ping-pong drama “Marty Supreme” begins streaming on HBO Max on Friday. The film stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, an ambitious table tennis pro who wants championship glory and will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. While “Marty Supreme” did not live up to its Oscar aspirations, earning nine nominations (including Best Picture) but no wins at the 2026 Academy Awards, it cleaned up at the box office, becoming A24’s highest-grossing worldwide release to date. Directed by BU alumnus Josh Safdie, the film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa Azion, Kevin O’Leary and Fran Drescher. Available on HBO Max
No stranger to action thrillers, Oscar winner Charlize Theron will star alongside Golden Globe winner Taron Egerton in the new film “Apex,” premiering Friday on Netflix. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur, the film stars Theron as Sasha, an “unhappy woman” who is being stalked in the Australian outback by Egerton’s Ben, a psycho killer who enjoys hunting humans, according to the logline. But can Theron’s Sasha turn the hunter into the hunted? Available on Netflix
New TV show now available to stream

‘Stranger Things: Stories from the ’85’
For fans who bought into “Conformity Gate” — the online conspiracy that a secret ninth episode awaited after the “Stranger Things” series finale — “Tales from ’85” is probably cold comfort. Now streaming on Netflix, the new spinoff is an animated take on the world of “Stranger Things” set between the second and third seasons of the main show. Hawkins’ heroes are back to face new monsters from the Upside Down, but they’re all voiced by different actors from their live-action counterparts. Available on Netflix

Co-created by Cambridge’s Mindy Kaling, the sports comedy “Running Point” returned to Netflix this week for its second season. In the series, Kate Hudson plays Isla, the president of the fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball team, who must deal with new problems on and off the court. Justin Theroux is back as her scheming brother Cam, while Ray Romano, Ken Marino and others join in the fun for the latest season, with all 10 new episodes now available to stream. Available on Netflix

A notable drop in awards season, the Korean black comedy “No Other Choice” is streaming on Hulu starting Friday. In the satire from “Oldboy” director Park Chan-wook, Lee Byung-hun (“Squid Game”) plays a man fired from a paper company after nearly three decades of service who wants to eliminate his competition for a potential new job. Globe film critic Odie Henderson gave “No Other Choice” three stars in his review and wrote that the screenplay is “packed with black comedy and subtle satire on toxic masculinity.” Available on Hulu
