Kim Petras Shares New Single “Jeep”: Listen

When I say the words “Kim Petras Ballad”, what comes to your mind? This can immediately cause a slight internal cramping. Petras, the pioneering trans pop artist, made her name by making aggressively erotic club music, and that’s mostly what she’s been doing since breaking away from Republic and striking out on her own. In recent singles like “Need for Speed”, Petras has delved hard into hyperpop, working with peers like Frost Children. But that’s not what she does on her new single “Jeep.” Instead, it’s a song by Kim Petras, and it’s better than you could imagine.

“Jeep” is a light country acoustic guitar song, but it is a light country acoustic guitar song, very similar to Madonna’s “Don’t Tell Me”. Even before the inevitable clubbing drums arrive, the guitars get distorted in some pretty cool ways. Petras uses heavy Auto-Tune to sing about sex with an ex: “We’ve got history, and history repeats.” On the singsong spoken-word outro, Petras delivers a relatively good song in some funny places: “We can just drive around! Hear the txsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss’ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss list. On the spoken-word outro, Petras delivers a relatively good song: “We can just drive around! Hear the txssssssssssssssssssssss!

Do you know who worked on this song? Porch. Petras co-wrote and co-produced Jeep with Porches, along with his regular producers Nightfeelings and Dorian Electra collaborator Eric Cross. Leonie Miller-Echolz directed the video, and Petras looks super-glamorous, even if it’s not in the CGI wonderland she often inhabits. Check it out below.

“Jeep” is now available on Bunhead/Amigo.
