Substrate (www.substrate.cc) is building the world’s first AI native BPO, starting with healthcare RCM. We are focused on helping healthcare enterprises like physician groups, EMR providers, and BPOs accelerate AR and get reimbursed quickly and cost-effectively. We have already touched over 500k health care claims every month.
Role
We are looking for an exceptional Harness Engineer to help build systems around our agents and AI products. You will be instrumental in advancing AI systems that are already in production, and improving success rates for probabilistic products and accuracy for deterministic products. You’ll build systems that understand complex healthcare contracts, read EDI companion guides, use tools to navigate highly sensitive healthcare infrastructure and banking/financial infrastructure, and make intelligent decisions about claims processing – all in service of helping healthcare providers get paid fairly.
what will you work on
- Build and expand our group of agents – Design agents and their surrounding systems to perform a variety of functions for health care practices, including monitoring claims, reviewing payer policies, determining medical necessity, iterating through disorganized provider data, reconciling payments, and more.
- Deploy agents and the systems around them – Partner with customers and prospects on edge use cases, getting agents working securely in highly sensitive environments.
- Develop high quality measurement infrastructure: Improve the way we measure and track agent and model behavior, increase precision, and build systems to help optimize the speed and cost of producing traffic that hits millions of claims each year.
- Adapt to the nature of the work: How work is done is changing. Individuals have more leverage than ever before. A big part of the role (and all roles at Substrate) is to figure out how to be more effective, efficient, and leveraged as the toolscape rapidly evolves around us.
if you can fit
- You have been carrying the burden in previous roles, and are willing to take an excessive amount of ownership.
- You are interested in digging deeper into problems than any reasonable person would in the service of excellence.
- You have a track record of independently building and shipping ML/AI products that solve real business problems
- Deep experience with modern LLM architectures, fine-tuning approaches, and using evals at scale
- You either already have knowledge of the healthcare field, or you’re excited about using AI to automate the boredom in healthcare
- You have either started a company before, launched independent products and worked at scale, or have been a beginning startup engineer
- You are both skilled as a software engineer in the traditional sense, and you have fully adopted coding agents into your workflow.
- You’re excited to be working in-person 3 days a week in San Francisco.
