Germany’s 2014 World Cup winners — Where are they now? Marco Reus

In this series, BFW looks at all members of the 2014 World Cup-winning Germany men’s national team – players and coaches – reflecting on their performances from that time and examining where they stand today. Today we have the man who is one of the most talented Germans to ever play, but also one of the unluckiest when it comes to fitness: the indomitable Marco Reus.

Unfortunately, Reus missed the 2014 World Cup due to an ankle injury suffered in the team’s final warm-up game a week before the tournament; He was already named as part of the final squad, although he was a key player in the qualification period from 2012 to 2013. Reus was present in excitement as the Germans held up their shirts during the trophy ceremony just after the final whistle.

Reus retired from international football in 2021, but is still an active player, having spent the majority of his career with boyhood club Borussia Dortmund. In 2024, he transferred to Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS where he will play until the end of 2026. It is with the Galaxy that Reus won his first professional league title, when his team defeated the New York Red Bulls 2–1 in the MLS Cup final in 2024.
