Dyson’s back with a travel-size Supersonic hairdryer

Ten years ago, Dyson kicked off the hair gadget arms race with its $400 supersonic hairdryer. Today, it’s back with a slightly smaller and cheaper travel-sized version.

As the name suggests, the $299.99 Supersonic Travel is for people on the go – whether it’s a business trip or hitting the gym before work. Dyson claims it’s 32 percent smaller, 25 percent lighter, and able to fit in purses and carry-on luggage. It uses the same basic technology as Supersonic, although it now automatically adapts the voltage according to the country you are in. And those who have already invested in the original Supersonic don’t have to worry about purchasing new attachments. The new hair dryer is backward compatible. (Otherwise, various attachments are sold separately.)

Technically, this isn’t the first Supersonic update. In 2024, Dyson introduced the $569.99 Supersonic R, which was aimed at professional hair stylists before reaching consumers the previous year. That hair dryer had a very slim design to reduce wrist pain, as well as RFID attachments that automatically adjusted heat and airflow.

Ever since Supersonic arrived on the scene, Dyson has gone all in on hair. This includes several versions of the Viral Airwrap Curler, the Coral Straightener, and the Airstraight Wet-to-Dry Hair Straightener. Its various hair gadgets (and their premium price tags) have enjoyed viral popularity among beauty influencers, leading to an influx of duplicates like the Shark FlexStyle. (Because Absolutely Dyson isn’t the only vacuum manufacturer that has discovered that hair gadgets also make use of airflow.) L’Oréal also recently got into the hair tech game with the ColorSonic hair-dye wand, as well as its AirLite Pro hairdryer and Lite Straight Flat Iron.

Funnily enough, Dyson’s beauty journey now extends beyond gadgets. it Too It now makes hair oils, serums, styling creams and scalp treatments.
