Contract postal worker pleads guilty to failing to deliver hundreds of pieces of mail in Baldwin

Mobile, Ala. (WALA) – A Robertsdale man who was employed as a contract postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service admitted that he failed to deliver hundreds of pieces of mail.

Timothy Chandler, 23, pleaded guilty to delaying or destroying mail.

According to Chandler’s written plea agreement, he had a delivery route that included homes and businesses. Robertsdale police responded Nov. 29 to a complaint that a large amount of undelivered mail was found in her recently rented apartment from last year. This was enough to fill about eight post office boxes.

Officers found mail on the living room floor, under a chair mattress, in the stove, on top of shelves and inside the refrigerator.

According to plea documents, more mail was in trash bags, and several greeting cards sent through the mail were opened.

Investigators also found 66 empty containers.

A federal judge set sentencing for August 31. Chandler faces a maximum of five years in prison, but prosecutors have agreed to recommend leniency.
