Claude Guillemot, One Of Ubisoft’s Co-Founders, has Died In A Plane Crash

The accident reportedly occurred on June 19 at an airstrip near the west coast of France.

Claude Guillemot, one of the five brothers who co-founded Ubisoft in 1986, has died, the company has confirmed. As first reported ouest franceGuillemot, 69, was one of two victims involved in the Cessna 421 plane crash on the afternoon of June 19. According to reports, local firefighters said the crash occurred in a field near La Baule Airport on the west coast of France. Emergency responders said that when they arrived the plane was on fire and spreading into the surrounding environment.

“Ubisoft is deeply saddened to learn of the death in an accident of Claude Guillemot, group co-founder and Chairman of Guillemot Corp.,” Ubisoft said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. No further statement will be made at this time.”

Along with his brothers, Guillemot grew Ubisoft into a major video game publisher headquartered in France, with successful franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. Guillemot was also chairman and CEO of Guillemot Corp., which owns DJ equipment manufacturer Hercules and gaming peripheral company Thrustmaster. Guillemot also served on Ubisoft’s board of directors, while his brother, Yves, is still Ubisoft’s director, chairman and CEO.
