Exclusive: After 13 seasons, original cast member LaRoyce Hawkins is leaving the NBC police procedural as a series regular, sources tell Deadline. As we’ve heard, he’ll be back in the first two or three episodes of the upcoming season 14 to complete his character Kevin Atwater’s storyline.

Hawkins started as Atwater chicago pd The series premiered in 2014 and has consistently been a fan favorite throughout the show’s thirteen seasons. As part of Hank Voight’s (Jason Beghe) intelligence unit, Atwater worked alongside fellow elite officers, most recently including Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), Dante Torres (Benjamin Levi Aguilar), and the previously mentioned Imani. As a beautiful, honest, and loyal character, fans often discussed Atwater’s personal life, with hopes that she would find someone equally wonderful to settle down with.
And while he got close before, things never got serious. This is until Season 13 Episode 5, when Atwater reunites with Officer Tasha Fox (Karen Obilome), a perfect friend from his past who is now a lover. However, the potential love affair is immediately challenged as Tasha reveals that night that she is moving to Miami in a week for a new job. Before Atwater woke up the next morning, she was gone. But she leaves an orange, with an open invitation for Atwater to come along with her, as a sign to her new home in the Sunshine State.
As the season continued, Atwater struggled to reach out to Tasha. He’ll start writing a text saying he misses her, but never clicks send. She considered what to say and whether she should move on, but there was a pull between them that was undeniable. Later in episode 11, Fox is back in Chicago and is at Atwater’s doorstep. She is pregnant with her first child. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Atwater left the Windy City for Miami.
