This version of the cloud should provide more efficient performance at lower cost.
Anthropic has released a new version of the cloud that aims to handle queries not just from human users, but also from agentic AI. The company says its new Sonnet 5 model is capable of handling agentive tasks and offers similar performance specifications to its recent Opus models, but at a lower price.
Starting September 1, Sonnet 5 will be priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens as a base. Before that date the prices will be even lower. In contrast, Opus 4.8 is currently priced at $4 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. It will be available in cloud code and cloud platforms at those prices. Sonnet 5 will also be available for all subscriptions, including the default model for Anthropic’s free and Pro tier of cloud plans.
Agent AI tools ask far more questions about a model than even a human could, and they are largely responsible for instances where customers, particularly enterprise businesses, spend large amounts of their budget on tokens. If you want to learn about tokens and costs for the cloud we have a more detailed explainer here, as there are still free options for casual users. While it may not prevent excessive spending, Sonnet 5 takes advantage of a new tokenizer to provide greater efficiency to parties that are heavy agent users.
