It suspended all access to Mythos and Fable following an order from the US government.
The company announced at X that the US government has granted Anthropic permission to redeploy Mythos 5 to “a group of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure.” Although Anthropic did not say how many organizations would restore their access, Semaphore has reported that the company has received permission to redeploy its strongest cybersecurity model to more than 100 institutions in the US, including major corporations and government agencies.
Anthropic said it is rapidly redeploying Mythos 5 and continuing to work with the government to expand access even further. It is also in talks with the government to make the Fable 5 available for use again, but has not given any timeline for this.
If you’ll recall, Anthropic blocked all of its customers’ access to the Mythos 5 and Fable 5 on June 12, its model designed to expose many of the Mythos’ capabilities to the public. The company said at the time that the government wanted it to suspend access to its models to all foreign nationals, even if they were in the US and working for Anthropic. The government reportedly instructed Anthropic after Amazon and other companies warned that the model could be jailbroken and used by bad actors. US officials were also reportedly concerned that a group linked to China had gained access to Mythos 5.
according to SemaphoreCommerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote a letter to Anthropic explaining his decision. “I have determined that appropriate security measures are in place to allow certain trusted partners access to the Cloud Mythos 5 model,” he reportedly wrote. “Anthropic has committed to working with the US government on protocols and standards and releases for its models,” he said. Lutnick’s letter also revealed that Anthropic has made significant progress in removing the blockage by engaging daily with the government over the past two weeks.
