Creator and voice star of the cult-favorite Adult Swim animated series smiling friends Happy to find my groove.
smiling friends Its season three finale aired on Sunday, focusing on Hare and the mysterious Glep. Michael Cusack and Zack Haddell co-created the project which takes place in 2022 and focuses on coworkers Charlie (voiced by Haddell) and Pim (Cusack) who are attempting to bring positivity into the lives of others. The show has become a tremendous breakout for Adult Swim, which has already renewed it for two more seasons.
during a conversation with hollywood reporterCusack and Heddle discussed how the different rhythms of the first two seasons helped inform the third season, their reactions when fans appeared to read too much into certain show moments and how the Beatles served as inspiration for how long the series would ultimately last.

Why did the season three finale feel like the right time to explore Glep’s past?
zack hadel It feels right to explain what one of the main characters does in season three. ,laughs.) Why is he here? What does he do? In the first episode of season two we have a strange line where a man says, “What does the green thing do?” And since then, people have been quoting it. Felt like a good time to respond.
Were there other possible flashbacks to Glep’s past that you considered for the episode?
Hadel Whenever we started thinking about the show, we had this idea in mind that Gleap would be thousands of years old. We had some other ideas (and) we may use them in later seasons. An interesting idea was that Gleap went back to his home country, (and) what are other Gleap people like? We went in a lot of different directions, and everything felt like it didn’t itch. A large portion of the episode is just flashbacks, but it works well because it’s fun, it’s unique and it keeps it from being a serious historical episode.
Michael Cusack We wanted to do a time travel episode through smiling friends Universe. The words of the Founding Fathers that they are brothers and speak modern language are ridiculous to us.
How has Charlie and Pim’s relationship developed this season?
Cusack It always naturally evolves what we find strange in them. “Squim” was a good example of Pim maybe realizing he didn’t have the best partner in his job and questioning it, but he always bounces back, and he loves Charlie. It is questionable what Charlie thinks of Pym. ,laughs.) This is a bit vague.
Hadel I believe Charlie is a recluse and likes Pimms. If he didn’t like it he wouldn’t work there. But it is definitely unbalanced.
Cusack Charlie probably views Pim as a peer. Pim sees Charlie as his best friend. Charlie is like, “I like you, but don’t go too far from me.”

This season delved deeper into fans’ relationships with favorite projects. There was some talk on social media about an anime con tag for the Squim episode.
Cusack To be honest, I was very upset when I saw this trending on Twitter. First of all, it’s just a guy wearing a Sailor Moon costume. People read it a lot. But I really liked that it became a controversy because it was funny. It was a silly moment. Well, this was not even a dispute. There was the BlueSky vs. Twitter stuff – it’s classic. (Differences between platforms) have become a thing now.
Hadel It’s also that classic thing where more people are talking about it being controversial than (the actual reaction). One person said something. That was definitely no comment on the fans. If you go to a convention, especially one around beautiful cosplay girls, some of the gentlemen really have no hygiene sensibilities. Also, people go to X-rated conventions. I would say 99.999 percent of the people I’ve met are fans smiling friends Have been great. So this is not a comment. No one has done this to us yet.
Cusack it’s not in smiling friends Be it topical or political in nature or anything like that. As Zack said, whenever something like this happens, it’s a one percent reaction to what they’re reading, and most people are like, “You’re reading too much into it.” It’s always fun to watch.
Hadel It’s incorporated into the show, where we’ve hidden all these fun little things that we want people to find. But it’s almost like we’ve changed people’s recognition of schizophrenia patterns, where they’re now looking for something everywhere. I’ll let some people go, “This is a reference bomber 64You’re like, “What are you talking about?”

You have references to Mr. Frog’s disastrous presidency and assassinations. Are real-life politics on your mind when you’re working on the episode?
Hadel Probably yes, in the sense that when we’re making the show, there’s shit going on all around us, and sometimes in the writer’s room, it’s like, “Oh my God, did you see North Korea launch an ICBM over Japan? Jesus Christ.” Sometimes that stuff like stress or COVID will add to it. Talking about Charlie’s phone background (showing an image of Mr. Frog surviving an assassination attempt), the real-world level, the political-touch on that stuff – first of all, this isn’t real life. but in that office smiling friendsThey will all have different politics. One of them would be quote, don’t quote more Democrat voters. One would be a little more Republican. A friend group having different POVs, which was really coming from somewhere. Charlie is a friend who visits strange websites and watches conspiracy related content on TikTok. Pim is not. Pimm’s dose is probably flowers and good songs.
Cusack We love many things, such as history, politics and world interests. Obviously, this is playing out in our minds, but we make sure that the show is apolitical that way. We don’t want to be one of those shows that picks sides or supports anyone. Someone told me this a long time ago, and it’s a really good lesson: “Why would you split your audience in half?” Our personal politics are all over the place, so we just try to be funny.
With Brian (O’Halloran) clerks Appearing on this season, was he a fan of the show?
Hadel I won’t speak for Brian, but I’ll bet he’s not a fan of the show. I don’t think he knew what it was. But he was very kind. He was an angel. He did millions of takes when he didn’t have to. But I don’t think he knows what it is smiling friends Is. ,laughs,
Cusack Zach and I grew up as big fans of clerksThis got me involved in filmmaking, So getting that was a dream, That’s why when I watch that scene, I’m like, “Let Brian talk about it clerksIf I were the boss, I’d want to hear him spout common sense. ,heddle laughs.) Brian seems like a really great guy, and he shouldn’t have died Clerk IIIhe should have lived clerk 4In my opinion.
Hadel ,clerk 4), he wakes up from a nightmare where he died.
Send him to Kevin (Smith). If Brian had said no, were there other options for that scene?
Cusack We’ve always had this joke (an idea) where the boss says, “Hey, do you guys want to hang out with Randall? clerksThe joke to us was, “Are you talking about Randall’s character clerksOr actor?” He’s like, “Yeah, Randall.” That gave us Brian because I think we just assumed that the actor (Jeff Anderson) who plays Randall clerks Doesn’t really say yes to many things. I don’t think we would have asked him. I think we just went to Brian’s.
Hadel Yeah, the basic thing was that The Boss is like, “If you do good work – I’m not going to say it, but maybe Randall clerks Maybe hang out with us later.” This was going to be the entire premise of the episode. I also think at some point we considered Kevin Smith himself.
Cusack Kevin Smith was definitely an option at some point.
Hadel All three of them. It turned around.
Cusack We went to Brian because we knew he says yes to this kind of fun stuff.

Are there any takeaways for you now that the new season has aired?
Hadel I’m really proud of the whole season. In season two, it had some pretty good highs. We learned some lessons writing-wise. Season two is always the hardest because you’re trying to replicate season one but not make it exactly the same. (For season three) we’ve made progress in understanding the characters better and I like that every episode is different. Schmalog is completely different, and then you have Silly Sam. It doesn’t feel like we’re doing anything alike.
Cusack We’ve finally gotten to the point where it’s coming out more naturally. Scripts can flow easily. What I want to take away for future seasons is that no matter how big the show gets or how much attention is paid to the script, I always want to keep in mind that there’s entertainment to be had with Zack along with the writing. At the end of the day, it’s an excuse and a playground for us to come up with fun, silly things.
Hadel Not taking it too seriously. If you really look at it zoomed-out, season one was very plot-heavy. Season two meandered a bit more. It had a little less plot and more improvisation. For us, the origin of smiling friends It’s a really handy thing. Season three does a good job of weaving in improvised moments. You get 10 seconds instead of 30-second or minute-long improv scenes.
Have you written new episodes yet?
Cusack We have written two scripts. We have got a chance to make the third one. Very happy with it so far. It’s always fun to come back refreshed with ideas.
It seems like Hollywood is trying to create comedy series that appeal to Gen Z. what is the secret?
Cusack We don’t follow the pipeline of Hollywood shows. We don’t have table read. We don’t have a big writers’ room. We’re just like us. Shows should come from the perspective of an individual, pair or group. There are a lot of Hollywood shows that are a weird machine.
Hadel A network partners with a comedian or any random artist they find. The strange thing is that everyone involved is talented in their own right, but nothing is being created out of passion. They literally sit down and say, “How do we create a hit show?”
This season included commentary about simpsons Running for so long. What are your latest thoughts on when you might hang it up?
Cusack We’ll see how we feel after four and five, and then Zack and I will get in the war room and decide what the next plan is. We can almost guarantee it won’t last as long as these other shows.
Hadel Even if we have thousands of views at the end of season five, we won’t be able to last long. Thats all I will say. We’re not going to raise any numbers, but probably five is getting close to where we’d like to end it.
Is Adult Swim twisting your hand to keep it going?
Cusack Even our agents think we’re going to Season 80. ,laughs.) Our reps and adult swimmers are like, “Sure, we’ll keep going forever.” But Zach and I know what’s best for the show. The Beatles are great. they finished with Abbey Road Extreme, and it’s like this nice little discography that you can go back to look at. It’s best to leave the audience wanting more.
Wings had some good songs.
Cusack Yeah, but it was good because it was like a reset. If Zach and I made another show after this smiling friendsThat would be an excuse to freshen up again. That’s why Wings was good because Paul McCartney was like, “Okay, now I can start again.”
