The New York Yankees made a huge deal with the Milwaukee Brewers to acquire Devin Williams last season. But Williams’ year with the Yankees was not as impressive as many expected,
Now Williams is a free agent, and there are plenty of teams that might be willing to take a chance on him. Practically every contending team is looking to add to their bullpen in the offseason, so Williams could fit in with almost every team in baseball.
Just Baseball’s Ryan Finkelstein recently estimated that Williams would sign a four-year, $60 million deal with the New York Mets this winter.

Finkelstein wrote, “Williams could take a shorter deal that allows him to come straight back into free agency after a good season, but for this deal, we’re guessing what a four-year contract might look like.” “If the Mets, or any team, commit to Williams for four years at $15 million per year, they could potentially opt-out after the second year instead of the first, guaranteeing two years of his services in the back-end of their bullpen.”
The Mets could lose Edwin Diaz to free agency this winter, which would cripple their bullpen. They will likely want to retain Diaz at all costs.
Either way, signing Williams makes a lot of sense.
If Diaz leaves they could sign him as the new closer, which would be a big risk. But they could also use him as a setup man for Diaz or another close star. Either way, this idea makes a lot of sense for the Mets.
