The social media platform has introduced a feature where one can see the country where their account is located. One has to go to the account and click on the Date Joined tab, which will open on a new page. This reveals the country from where that particular account is being operated. Although the feature was removed for a while after its launch, it has now been added again, and both sides of the political spectrum are having a field day calling each other out online.
What to know about ‘US’ accounts based in the US
The accounts discussed here have pushed agendas within the US, and regularly comment on American politics. Many are also designated to echo political movements, such as some MAGA accounts.
However, these ‘political influencers’ have been found to be based outside the US, raising questions about motives.
A profile run by ‘MAGA NATION’, which has over 392,000 followers, is based from Eastern Europe. Similarly, ‘Dark Maga’, a page with over 15,000 followers, is based out of Thailand. ‘MAGA Scope’, which has over 51,000 followers, actually operates out of Nigeria, and ‘America First’, an account with over 67,000 followers, is actually operated out of Bangladesh.

It wasn’t just on the MAGA side. An account run by ‘Ron Smith’, whose bio claims he is a ‘Proud Democrat’ and ‘Professional MAGA Hunter’, operates from Kenya. This account has more than 52,000 followers.
The anti-Donald Trump page ‘Republicans Against Trump’ on Twitter, which seeks to push politics against MAGA, was reportedly operating from Austria. While the location now shows US, X notes that the account location may not be accurate due to the use of a VPN. “The anti-Trump account “Republicans Against Trump” which is followed by 1M has been identified as a non-American from Austria and is currently using a VPN to hide its location,” one page noted.
‘Republicans Against Trump’ has more than 978,000 followers.
On a side note, an account of ‘Mariana Times’ with over 78,000 followers, which posts pro-Israel content, has been found to be based from India.
People within the MAGA orbit have also reacted to the new feature. Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna wrote from her personal account on
Alexis Wilkins, the girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel, also said, “I hope everyone will see, no matter what their specific reasons, that the enemy is outside the home. People who call themselves Americans with big American ideas, but are really working from a basement around the world, have one goal in mind – to destroy the United States. We have our issues, but we really can’t let them succeed.”
