OpenAI has added plugin support to its agentive coding app Codex in an apparent effort to match similar features offered by competitors Anthropic (in Cloud Code) and Google (in Gemini’s command line interface).
What OpenAI calls “plugins” are actually bundles that can include skills (“signs that describe the workflow of codecs” – a standard feature in such tools these days), app integrations, and MCP (Model Reference Protocol) servers.
The idea is that they make it possible to configure codecs in certain ways to make specific tasks easier for the user and repeatable for multiple users in an organization.
Overall, they don’t enable anything that wasn’t possible before. Power users can already introduce custom instructions, use MCP servers, etc. to create this functionality. But in this case, it’s basically one-click installation.
The Codex app now has a Plugins section that takes users to a searchable library of plugins intended to allow Codex to integrate tightly with some external service or application – examples include GitHub, Gmail, Box, Cloudflare, and Vercel.
