Stranger Things Season 5 Vol. 1 Just premiered, and right at the beginning of the first episode, it’s established that the people of Hawkins still hate Eddie Munson. While the character died heroically, it seems the hatred for Eddie has only increased in the latest season.
Here’s an explanation of why people still hate Eddie.
Why do people hate Eddie in Stranger Things Season 5?
Stranger Things season 5 begins after the events of season 4, where Vecna murders several teenagers and destroys massive portals throughout Hawkins. This not only affected the city physically, but also had an emotional impact on the residents.
Unfortunately, only a handful of people know the truth. Most people blame natural causes for the cracks in the ground and believe that Eddie Munson murdered the children. He had already earned an unfair reputation for his reckless behavior and was labeled an “eccentric”. On top of that, his Dungeons & Dragons group, the Hellfire Club, was also accused of being a satanic cult.
The problems began when Vecna killed Chrissie Cunningham in a gruesome manner. Since she was in Eddie’s trailer at the time of his death, everyone naturally blamed her. To make things worse, two more people died in the same manner, and Chrissie’s boyfriend, Jason Carver, escalated tensions with his hate campaigns against the Hellfire leader. This sentiment has clearly carried over to the latest season, which takes place 18 months after the event.
Since the authorities never told the Hawkins residents the truth, Eddie remains the scapegoat for all the deaths. And Dustin is still wearing the Hellfire Club T-shirt around school, which seems to anger the others even more. Jason’s friend continues to bully Dustin into associating himself with the club, and later defaces Eddie’s gravestone with the words “Burn in Hell”.
Still, there’s no doubt that Eddie experienced a heroic death in the season 4 finale. In a desperate attempt to distract Vecna’s demobots in the Upside Down, he sacrifices himself to save Dustin. As a result, Dustin continues to proudly wear Hellfire Club t-shirts in honor of his heroic friend.
The first four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 Vol. 1 is now streaming on Netflix. Vol. 2 will air on Christmas.
