Why ‘For All Mankind’ Season 5 Is the Key to the Rest of the Series

when i first spoke for all Mankind Showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivy reported last week that Apple had not yet announced a sixth and final season of the show. And yet, after watching the upcoming fifth season, I just had the feeling that it was inevitable.

More than almost any of the last four seasons, for all Mankind Season five, which debuts tomorrow on Apple TV, introduces stories and characters designed to tell not only a great story this year, but great stories for years to come.

“What you feel in this season, probably most of all, is the generational change,” Nedivy told io9 days before the news of season six. “I think every year, that reflects the theme we’re trying to capture in that season. So last year, season four was about workers on Mars. So it made sense to introduce Miles [Toby Kebbell] and sam [Tyner Rushing]These characters that represent labor. This season is about whether Mars is a home and what that means. Identification of being a Martian. And then you needed these kids, these young characters who have a connection to Mars and what it means to be a person like Alex. [Baldwin]For someone who grew up on Mars, it is a small town and Earth is a foreign place. “It’s a twist on how we normally look at Mars.”

For those who may not have caught up, season five for all Mankind Is set in the 2010s. After landing on Mars in season three and populating it in season four, season five, as Nedivy said, is about making it home. That means family. And that means new characters. lots of them.

Nedivi added, “I think that’s why for us, a lot of these characters, as much as I want to say it was like a deliberate generational shift, came from a natural place of what the story was telling us.” “But it gave you that opportunity that I think is really unique for our show to have three generations of characters. Not only seeing Ed Baldwin age from his 30s to his 80s, but then being able to see his daughter and his son and that’s how the family tradition continues.”

Alex, played by Shawn Kaufman, and Lily, played by Ruby Cruz, are the two main characters in that aspect. Alex is the son of Kelly Baldwin (Cynthy Wu), whose father Ed (Joel Kinnaman) has been the star of the show since day one. Lily is the daughter of Miles (Kebell), a key figure in the Martian rebellion in the previous season, who has since moved his family to Mars. And while we don’t know what the season holds for them, it would be strange if they didn’t come back for season six.

It would also be absurd if season six didn’t take things beyond Mars. Without spoiling anything, part of season five focuses on Martians attempting to venture deeper into space, and showrunners say that’s also part of the grand design.

“Most of the story this season is about making Mars home, but we didn’t want to feel like it was the end point of space exploration,” Wolpert told io9. “There’s always an underlying thing of, ‘Okay, yes, we’re making it here, but what’s next? What’s over that next hill?’ And so that spirit of exploration was really important for us to keep moving forward. “And it felt like the search for life in the solar system was the right way to inspire that.”

So the new characters and further exploration of our solar system not only propel season five forward, but exist specifically to allow the show to eventually make it to season six. This is something that did not seem possible at all before. While fans of for all Mankind I like this show, but it never got the same hype or promotion as other shows on Apple TV Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Or separation. So the fact that the show is still going is a credit to you. Yes you.

Wolpert said, “We’re very grateful to all the people who have found the show and who tell other people about the show, because really to me word of mouth is the best way to spread a show’s fan base.”

The fandom will continue to spread in the coming weeks for all Mankind begins its 10-episode fifth season on Friday. It will end on May 29, the same day as the spinoff, famous cityDebut. A sixth and final season is then expected to premiere in 2027. We will soon get much more from Mars.
