When we’re not pondering which couple had the best hookup or most steamy love scene, we’re re-reading all the Regency romance novels on which the show is based.
Julia Quinn’s book series is worth a watch for more reasons than one, especially if you want to gain a deeper understanding of the show. bridgerton It can be hard to keep track of the timeline if you’re only seeing events onscreen. What year does each pair meet, and how much time does each book cover? And when do they get married? Of course, there are some differences in adaptation, but there are also many similarities.
As we prepare ourselves for the love story of Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie (Yerin Ha) – January needs to be fast – we thought it’d be a good time to go back to the books.
What time period does it take place in? bridgerton take place?
duke and mewhich follows Simon (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), beginning in 1813. This period is known as the Regency era in British history, lasting from 1811 to 1820. It was so named because George, Prince of Wales, served as regent of the country when his father was mentally incompetent.
When were each Bridgerton sibling born?

Thankfully, there’s a great family tree on Quinn’s website, so you don’t have to check out every book for a refresher. (Although we’re always open to a re-read.)
Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) was born in 1784. This makes him the eldest Bridgerton brother. Benedict arrived two years later in 1786. Colin (Luke Newton) was born in 1791, Daphne in 1792, and Eloise (Claudia Jessie) in 1796. Francesca (Hannah Dodd) was born exactly a year after Eloise, so they share a birthday. Gregory (Will Tilston) and Hyacinth (Florence Hunt), the two youngest, were born in 1801 and 1803 respectively.

Going by the order of their appearance in the books, Simon was born in 1784, the same year as Anthony. Kate (Simone Ashley), Anthony’s girlfriend, was born in 1793. The couple have a nine-year age difference, but Kate has aged in the show. The age difference in the book between Benedict and Sophie is the same as that of Canthoni, who was born in 1794.
Colin and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) are five years apart, having been born in 1796. Eloise is two years younger than Sir Philip Crane (Chris Fulton), who was born in 1794. Michael Sterling (aka Michaela, played by Masali Baduza) was born in 1791, six years before Francesca. Gregory’s girlfriend Lucy was born in 1807, six years apart. Last but not least, Gareth was born in 1797. He is six years older than Hyacinth.
when does each bridgerton Couple meet?
Simon and Daphne met in 1813. Kate and Anthony’s story begins exactly one year later. The story of Benedict and Sophie is unique in that they were introduced at the Bridgerton Masquerade Ball in 1815, but did not meet again until two years later.
This is where the books really start to deviate from the show. Penelope and Colin technically meet as children, but after Colin’s visit they meet again and fall in love in 1824. That’s right: it’s completely decade After Anthony and Kate meet. Not nearly that much time passes between seasons 2 and 3 of the Netflix show.
The first meeting of Francesca and Michael is also a bit complicated. Francesca was married two years earlier to Michael’s cousin, John (Victor Ely). when he was evil Opens. Shortly before she is to marry John, Michael meets his future bride and falls in love at first sight. His first meeting with him took place around 1818.
To further complicate matters, Alois and Philippe technically did not meet until 1824, but they began exchanging letters about a year earlier. Hyacinth and Gareth also know each other before the start of her book, but it is unclear when they first meet. When her book begins in 1825, Hyacinth is regularly reading to Gareth’s grandmother, Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh).
Gregory and Lucy, on the other hand, had not met before their first conversation in 1827.

Quinn has a quick explainer of when each book begins, but we went back to the source material to check out how long the stories last – and most importantly, when each couple gets married.
Duke and I: April to August 1813 (marriage in May 1813)
The Viscount Who Loved Me: April to June 1814 (married in May 1814)
A proposal from a gentleman: May 1815 to June 1817 (marriage in June 1817)
Romancing Mr. Bridgerton: April to May 1824 (marriage in May 1824)
When he was evil: March 1820 to June 1824 (married May 1824)
To Sir Philip, with love: May to June 1824 (prologue February 1823; marriage June 1824)
That’s right: unlike the show, the main part of Colin, Eloise, and Francesca’s stories take place almost simultaneously. That’s why many fans of the show aren’t sure who will lead Season 5: Eloise or Francesca.
It’s in his kiss: May to June 1825 (1815 introduction; marriage in July 1825)
On the way to the wedding: May to July 1827 (marriage date unknown)
And there you have it! Hope this takes away all your irritation bridgerton Timeline question, although the show has already proven that it doesn’t follow it exactly. We’ll have to wait and see if Season 4 will feature Benedict two years Before finding his Lady in Silver again. (We certainly hope bridgerton Does. unconsciousness Loves a tortured longing.)
