Halloran and her grandmother, who also had psychic powers, were frightened as her grandfather loomed over them and cruelly taunted them. Then, worst The best thing Halloran can imagine happens: the elderly man, who is actually Pennywise in disguise, opens the box and releases all the horrors that Halloran has been hiding so carefully.
In the vision, the mental construct appears as an actual box, filled with orange glow like Pennywise’s deadly eyes.
When a dazed Halloran comes out of the sewer at the end of the episode, he sees Paulie (Rudy Mancuso), a soldier who was killed moments earlier in the tunnel. He shouldn’t be up and walking, but he is—and Halloran can see it clearly.

In the 2019 Mike Flanagan movie version, Carl Lumbly plays a ghostly version of the character who appears to Danny Torrance (not long after the events of the Overlook) with some useful advice. Decider, talking to Chalk and This: Welcome to Derry Co-showrunner Jason Fuchs shared a little more information about Halloran’s trauma.
Chalk said of his character, “All the horror he’s ever seen, he just put it in the box, slid it in the box, slid it in the box.” “So the moment you open him up, he’s not going to come out as gently as Dick put him in and he’s not happy being locked in a box. These are not entities that want to be trapped. And so when they can break free, they do, and it changes Dick forever.”
Fuchs added, “That last shot where you see Dick, Chris Chalk, [episode five] He’s seeing dead Polly on the river bank in front of him, which will take Dick to some very dark places, a place he’s been trying to get away from. There’s a reason he wanted to keep that box closed.
