Wall of Hong Kong’s Lee Theatre Plaza catches fire at lunchtime

A fire broke out in the outer wall of a shopping center in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, during lunch time on Tuesday.

Several videos circulating online showed artificial plants on the wall of Lee Theater Plaza overlooking Times Square engulfed in flames, spreading from the ground level to the third floor.

Police said they received multiple reports that a billboard in Causeway Bay caught fire at 12.53pm. The fire service department deployed a rescue team equipped with a water jet and breathing apparatus at the scene.

At least seven fire engines and a dozen firefighters were dispatched to the scene on Matheson Street. Firefighters were seen directing strong jets of water towards the upper left corner of the Uniqlo billboard outside the building.

The plume of smoke also attracted crowds of curious onlookers to gather on the road at lunch time.

The pungent smell of burnt plastic filled the streets around Lee Theater Plaza as well as inside the building.
