Wake Up Dead Man review: a darker, more powerful Knives Out

More than two movies, Rian Johnson knives out The series has introduced something largely absent from the modern film landscape: complex murder mysteries full of humor and gasp-worthy moments. Original knives out Things started off relatively small with a cozy whodunit, which later grew into a larger and more elaborate puzzle with the sequel. glass onionBoth were crowd pleasers, and in more ways than one wake up dead man follows the same formula, with its ensemble cast and abundant revelations. But it’s much darker and darker, which shows the limits of the franchise.

First of all, it’s a sad looking movie, especially compared to the bright and colorful glass onionThanks to the combination of the Gothic grandeur of the setting and lots of gray and stormy weather. The plot reflects that tone throughout the film.

This time, world-renowned detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is investigating the murder of a priest in a small town in New York. Of course, the story begins much earlier than that. Father Judge (Josh O’Connor) is a former boxer assigned to assist at Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude after a violent clash with another man of the cloth. There he found a church in a very pitiful condition. The stern Monsignor Wicks (Josh Brolin) has been tending his flock with a Trump-like hand, deliberately keeping the parishioners angry and fearful, establishing an us-versus-them mentality while keeping Wicks as the savior. When the judge arrives, Wicks’s first reaction is to ask: “Are you here to take my church away from me?”

The church has a sordid history, including a lost fortune linked to Vix’s father, and it’s currently home to a small group of regulars that run the gamut from failed political influencer Cy (Darryl McCormack) to sci-fi-author-turned-Substack-blogger Lee Ross (Andrew Scott) to conservative churchwoman Martha (Glenn Close) who takes care of everything and knows every secret, especially unpleasant ones. Even before the murder, the place is full of intrigue and mystery, and this is heightened when the seemingly impossible happens: in the middle of a Good Friday service, Wicks is killed while he was supposedly alone in a cell. It’s a classic locked-door murder mystery, and with it unsolvable, Blank is called in to help.

In many ways, wake up dead man It follows the same structure as the previous films. Blank is not actually the main character; Instead, someone assists him in his investigation, and that person is also the main person in the mystery and a possible suspect. In this case it is Father Judge, who, along with Blank, positions himself strongly against the rest of the parish, who sticks by Wicks even after death for reasons that become clear as the story progresses.

what actually makes wake up dead man However, unlike the rest of the series, the tone is toned down. It has shocking revelations and dramatic revelations, but is not as consistently “funny” as the previous films. There is a feeling of uncertainty over everything. Blank, in particular, often seems lost and confused. He may still be playful and charming, but he’s also an angrier version of the detective. Although his backstory remains largely a mystery, we learn that he grew up with a religious mother, but is now a “proud heretic”. There’s something about the religious setting of the investigation that really reaches out to Blank. The result is a more vulnerable side of the detective that we haven’t seen before.

Judge and Blank play off each other charmingly. Not only in terms of their chemistry, which is great, but also in terms of them questioning the situation in front of them. Due to the monster’s murder, and the harsh details revealed during the investigation, the Judge is often unsure of his beliefs, and unsure of what it means to do the right thing. Meanwhile, the same events, and their seemingly miraculous nature, complicate Blank’s previously unwavering faith in facts and logic.

Jeffrey Wright is hilarious despite only appearing in the film for a few minutes, and you get moments to laugh at the suspects, such as when the mad writer builds a literal moat around his house. As for the mystery itself, its scope and improbability continue to grow, making it harder to predict the outcome. As always, the film gives you all the pieces, but, as Blank finds out, fitting them together isn’t so easy.
