Venezuela’s authoritarian government has accused the US of risking plunging Latin America into chaos with an “extremely serious” act of “imperial aggression” after Donald Trump allegedly ordered an attack against the South American country.
Explosions, loud noises and low-flying planes were heard in the Venezuelan capital Caracas early Saturday amid reports that Trump had ordered the attack. In a statement, the Venezuelan government confirmed that Caracas, as well as three other states: Miranda, La Guerra and Aragua, were attacked.
“The sole purpose of this attack is to gain control over Venezuela’s strategic resources, especially its oil and minerals,” it said, calling on the international community to condemn what it called a gross violation of international law that puts millions of lives at risk.

Venezuela accused America of attacks
The government of President Nicolas Maduro said in a statement Saturday morning that Venezuela rejects “military aggression” by the United States.
“People in the streets!” The statement said. “The Bolivarian Government calls on all social and political forces in the country to activate mobilization plans and reject this imperialist attack.”
The statement said President Nicolas Maduro had “ordered the implementation of all national defense plans” and declared a “state of external disturbance.”
We’ll give you more details on this when we have it…
The Venezuelan government has now commented on the explosions, which they say were caused by attacks on the country.
In a statement seen by Reuters the government said the attacks took place in Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira.

My colleague and Guardian’s Latin America correspondent Tom Phillips has more about the situation in Caracas:
Explosions, loud noises and low-flying planes have been heard in Venezuela’s capital Caracas amid reports that Donald Trump has ordered an attack on the South American country.
Early Saturday morning, President of neighboring Colombia, Gustavo Petro, claimed on social media that Venezuela had been attacked. “Right now they are bombing Caracas… bombarding it with missiles,” Petro wrote, calling for an immediate emergency session of the UN Security Council.
Shortly thereafter CBS News reported that Trump had ordered the attacks – which also included military facilities.
At least seven explosions were heard around 2 a.m. local time, and people from different neighborhoods poured into the streets, the Associated Press reported.
“The whole ground shook. It’s terrible. We heard explosions and planes in the distance,” said Carmen Hidalgo, a 21-year-old office worker.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from two major military installations in Caracas: La Carlota military airfield in the center of the city and the Fuerte Tiuna military base where Venezuelan authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro is long believed to be based.
The Venezuelan government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The blasts follow a five-month U.S. pressure campaign against Maduro that many analysts believe is designed to topple the Venezuelan leader. Since August, Donald Trump has ordered a massive military buildup on Venezuela’s northern coast and conducted a series of deadly air strikes on alleged “narco boats.”
The White House and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment Saturday morning.
Colombian President calls emergency meeting of UN Security Council
The President of neighboring country Colombia is claiming on social media that Venezuela is under attack.
“At the moment they are bombing Caracas… bombarding it with missiles,” Gustavo Petro wrote on Twitter, calling for an immediate emergency session of the UN Security Council.
He said: “Colombia is a member of the UN Security Council from tomorrow and must be convened immediately. Establish the international legitimacy of the aggression against Venezuela. The PMU is active in Cúcuta and has operational plans on the border.”
