UN shocked by ‘apparent summary execution’ of Palestinians in Jenin
The United Nations on Friday strongly condemned the killing of two Palestinians by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin a day earlier. The unarmed Palestinians appeared to be surrendering to Israeli forces when they were gunned down.
“We are shocked by the brutal killing of Palestinian men by Israeli border police in Jenin yesterday,” UN rights office spokesman Jeremy Lawrence told reporters in the Swiss city of Geneva. Lawrence labeled the killing “another blatant summary execution”.
According to Lawrence, UN rights chief Volker Turk is urging an “independent, prompt and effective investigation into the killings of Palestinians”.
The Israeli military and police said they had begun an investigation into the incident and said those shot were linked to “terrorist networks in the area of Jenin”.
Ultranationalist Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed “full support” for the soldiers involved in the shooting, saying, “The terrorists must die.”

Germany’s Merz will visit Israel, will meet PM Benjamin Netanyahu
The German government announced on Friday that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will visit Israel next week, on December 6 and 7.
This will be Merz’s first visit to Israel after becoming chancellor in May.
During the visit, Meraz will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the ceasefire in Gaza and other issues on the agenda. The Chancellor will later visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial during the visit.
Germany is a strong ally of Israel, particularly because of the murder of six million Jews by the German Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel previously said that Israel’s security is Germany’s Staatsrösen or “state cause”.
Germany has supported Israel militarily and politically in the Gaza operation following the terrorist attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
German-Israeli relations became strained earlier this year, when the German government suspended arms exports to Israel that could be used in Gaza. Meraz’s government had become concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza amid Israeli attacks.
In October, a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect. Earlier this month, the German government said it would lift a partial suspension on arms supplies to Israel in light of the Gaza ceasefire.
