UK weather: Met Office amber warning in force for heavy rain and flooding

Meteorologically, winter has started with lots of rain across much of the UK.

This trend is likely to continue for most of Monday and be particularly heavy at times.

Rainfall totals will be fairly widespread, but with very saturated ground a number of yellow Met Office warnings will be in place.

A more severe amber Met Office warning is in place for south Wales until 23:59 GMT.

Widespread rainfall between 20 and 40 mm (0.8 and 1.6 in) is expected here, with some south-western hills receiving close to 120 mm (4.7 in).

This would mean that a month’s worth of rain would fall in just one day.

Widespread flooding is possible, along with disruption to road and rail networks, loss of power and communities potentially being cut off.

The Met Office has also warned that fast flowing water or deep flooding is possible, which could be life-threatening.
