Uber is launching a robotaxi service in Dallas

Uber is bringing robotaxis to Dallas — though don’t expect them to drive you around completely autonomously.

The company partnered with Everide to launch a robotaxi service (which it actually calls “robotaxis,” a term popularized by Tesla) in Dallas, covering 9 square miles of the city at launch — from Downtown to Uptown to Turtle Creek to Deep Ellum.

Uber customers will be able to access the service by simply requesting an UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric ride, although they cannot specifically select a robotaxi. Instead, they may be matched with an electric aviride robotaxi, and will have the option to switch to a non-robotaxi ride.

However, users can increase their chances of being matched with a robotaxi by making selections in the Ride Preferences section of the Uber app’s Settings.

While Uber says the Everide cars are designed to operate fully autonomously, there will be a driver behind the wheel at launch, monitoring the car’s behavior. Uber said it will launch fully driverless operations “in the future.”

With the move, the company joins Waymo and Tesla that already operate autonomous or semi-autonomous robotaxi services in Dallas.
