Local police in Washington, DC say they have a suspect in custody and the scene near the White House is secure.
Two National Guard soldiers have been shot in Washington, DC, a senior US official has confirmed, without providing additional details.
“Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were shot in Washington, DC, just moments ago,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a social media post Tuesday.
Noem did not share information about the condition of the troops.
He said his agency is working with law enforcement to investigate the matter.
Local police said a suspect was in custody after the shooting downtown near the White House.
Police initially asked people to stay away from the area of the shooting but later said the scene had been “secured”.
US President Donald Trump deployed federal troops to Washington in August in an operation he said was aimed at tackling crime in the nation’s capital.
Trump was not in the White House at the time of the shooting. He flew to Florida to spend the Thanksgiving holidays at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
