FCC Democrats say rules haven’t changed

The equal time rule, formally known as the equal opportunity rule, applies to radio or TV broadcast stations with an FCC license to use the public airwaves. When a station gives time to a political candidate, it must provide comparable time and space to the opposing candidate if an opposing candidate requests it.

The rules allow candidates to appear authentic News Programme. As the FCC explained in 2022, “Attendance by legally qualified candidates authentic During news broadcasts, interview programs, some types of news documentaries, and on-the-spot coverage authentic News events are exempt from level playing field.”

Entertainment talk shows are generally regarded as entertainment authentic News programs for this purpose. But Carr said in September that he wasn’t sure the show would be liked. Scene must qualify for the exemption, and today’s public notice shows that the FCC can no longer treat these shows as exempt.

Commissioner Anna Gomez, the only Democrat on the FCC, issued a press release criticizing the FCC for “a misleading announcement stating that certain late-night and daytime programs may no longer be eligible for long-running programming.”authentic ‘News interviews’ exempted under political broadcasting rules of the Commission.”

“Nothing fundamentally has changed with respect to our political broadcasting rules,” Gomez said. “The FCC has not adopted any new regulation, interpretation, or Commission-level policy to change the long-standing news exemption or similar time limits. For decades, the Commission has held that authentic News interviews, late-night programs and daytime news shows are entitled to editorial discretion based on newsworthiness, not political partisanship. That principle has not been repealed, modified, or voted down by the Commission. So this announcement does not change the law, but it does represent an escalation in the FCC’s ongoing campaign to censor and control speech.
