Trump claims everyone is ‘happy’ with Greenland deal
Trump told US broadcaster CNN that “everybody is very happy with the deal” and that it “gives us everything we needed to get.”
But Aja Chemnitz, a Greenlandic Inuit member of Denmark’s parliament, didn’t look too happy in a Facebook post published after Trump’s announcement.
“What we’re seeing in Trump’s statements these days is complete madness,” he wrote.
“NATO has no right to negotiate with Greenland without us,” he said. “Without us we are nothing.”
“Complete confusion is being created,” he said.

Recap: Trump backs off tariff threat after Greenland deal announced
Here’s a quick recap to keep you up to date on the latest happenings around Greenland.
Trump announces Greenland framework
Late Wednesday evening, President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social that the US and NATO have “outlined a future agreement with respect to Greenland and, indeed, the entire Arctic region.”
The announcement came after talks with NATO chief Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Later asked by a reporter whether the agreement fulfilled his desire for United States ownership of Greenland, Trump said the matter was “a little complicated”.
For his part, Rutte said in an interview that the issue of Denmark’s sovereignty was “not raised”.
Europe welcomes Trump’s cancellation of tariff threats
Countries including Denmark, Italy and the Netherlands said Trump’s decision to suspend tariffs on eight European countries was positive.
The tariffs were scheduled to begin on February 1, but Trump said he would not impose tariffs because of the new agreement.
Trump denies using force to occupy Greenland
Earlier in Davos, Trump said in a speech that he would not “use excessive power and force (to take control of Greenland) where we would, frankly, be invincible.”

Welcome to our coverage
Good morning and welcome to our blog about the situation in Greenland.
We’re separating the topics from our daily coverage of news from the World Economic Forum in Davos, which you can find here.
On Wednesday, European lawmakers suspended approval of a trade deal signed with the United States in July last year as the US pressured it to take control of Greenland.
Hours later, US President Donald Trump said he was going to hold back from imposing tariffs on eight European countries after citing a “productive” meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, with whom he said he had “outlined a future agreement” on Greenland.
On Thursday, European leaders met in what was billed as an emergency summit in Brussels in response to Trump’s tariff threat.
We know that the European Council President Antonio Costa sent the invitation An informal meeting over dinner with the Heads of Government of all 27 Member States, which is scheduled to take place in Brussels this evening.
We’ll keep an eye out and keep you informed.
