Toyota’s still trying to make hydrogen fuel cells happen

Toyota is teaming up with Daimler and Volvo to work on fuel cell technology. The Japanese company is signing the joint venture CellCentric which Volvo and Daimler launched in 2020. Once it is officially incorporated, Toyota and CellCentric will collaborate on the management of the development and production of the fuel cell unit cell.

Koji Sato, President and CEO of Toyota, said, “We are very grateful for the opportunity to join Daimler Trucks and Volvo Group as partners in building the Hydrogen Society soon.” “CellCentric, which has Toyota’s deep expertise in commercial sectors with more than 30 years of fuel-cell development in the passenger car sector, can combine its strengths to provide one of the world-leading fuel cell systems for heavy commercial vehicles.”

It’s a move that goes against the trend in the auto industry. Last year, Stellantis announced it would end its hydrogen fuel cell development program. This is the company which owns brands like Chrysler, Citroen, Fiat, Jeep and Peugeot. GM also abandons hydrogen in 2025. Even Toyota reconsidered some of its commitments to hydrogen last year, emphasizing industrial rather than commercial applications.
