Tom Aspinall: Briton diagnosed with eye condition after UFC 321 bout with Ciryl Gane

Specialist treatment continues and Aspinall “has not yet been medically cleared for combat activity”.

“Depending on clinical progression, if symptoms do not resolve, targeted periocular (around the eyeball) steroid injections or surgical intervention may be required to address persistent motility (motion) impairment,” the report said.

Earlier in November, veteran MMA referee Herb Dean said that officials would consider more regularly enforcing point deductions for eye injuries following the Aspinall incident.

Referee Jason Herzog decided to declare the fight a no-contest rather than disqualify the 35-year-old Gane for the foul.

Calling the fight a non-rivalry meant that they considered the foul to be accidental rather than intentional.

A disqualification would have resulted in a win for Aspinall, who hopes to get back in the cage with Gane once he recovers.

He added: “I’m obviously very eager, very eager to come back and beat this guy. But I have to be 100% right. So whenever I get a good look at something, that’s when I’ll do it.”

UFC gloves are fingerless and the promotion introduced redesigned gloves in June 2024 in an effort to reduce eye pokes, cuts and hand injuries.

But in November 2024 they reverted to the original style, which had not undergone any major redesign since it was mandated in 1997.
