TikTok says it’s ‘back to normal’ after winter storm-related outages

TikTok is finally “back to normal” in the US after days of technical issues and outages caused by winter storms. Less than a week after companies like Oracle took ownership of TikTok’s domestic operations, the platform suffered a major power outage when one of its primary US data center sites – operated by Oracle – was destroyed by a storm.

The problems began last Monday, January 26, when TikTok announced it was working on a “major infrastructure issue” and warned of bugs, time-out requests, missing earnings and more. The next day TikTok shared that progress had been made but there were still some issues. It says, “Creators may temporarily see ‘0’ views or likes on videos, and your earnings may appear as if they are missing. This is a display error caused by a server timeout; your actual data and engagements are protected.”

Then, yesterday, on February 1, TikTok claimed that the issue has been resolved and that users should no longer experience any related issues. “We’re sorry for the issues experienced by our US community. We appreciate how much you rely on TikTok to create, discover, and connect with the things that matter to you,” the platform said in its update. “Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Many US users have uninstalled TikTok in response to its new ownership and technical issues. Some users also claimed that TikTok is restricting what they can post or what others can see. For example, Guardian The report said many people faced problems sharing videos about the killing of Alex Pretty by ICE agents and general anti-ICE content.

On January 26, analytics firm Sensor Tower reported cnbc App uninstalls have increased by more than 150 percent in the five days since the change in ownership, compared to the previous three months. At the same time, independent apps and competing upscaled apps saw an increase in downloads.
