TikTok has new weapons against AI for users who want it off their feed

It seems social media users are tired of AI-generated content on their favorite platforms. And there is a growing backlash against AI-generated content, or “AI slop” as it is often called.

According to TikTok, the company is currently testing a new content control in the “Manage Topics” feature, which will allow users to specifically adjust how much AI-generated content they see on the platform.

The “Manage Topics” feature already gives users the ability to tell TikTok’s algorithms what type of content they want to see in your feed as it relates to a specific content category like “Current Affairs,” “Health & Fitness,” or “Fashion & Beauty.” The AI-generated content topic control stands out from all of them as it appears to be the first one that covers all the topic categories of TikTok and deals with it explicitly. TikTok made it clear in its announcement that the company itself is not anti-AI, saying it “believes that when used transparently and responsibly, AI can transform the way people share their creativity, discover new passions, and stay safe on our platform” and that it “invests in AI-powered experiences that create value for our community.”

However, the company also stresses at times that it is important to be transparent with users.

To help with that transparency, TikTok is also testing an “invisible watermarking” solution to help strengthen its current AI label policies. TikTok says this “invisible watermark” will “help add another layer of safeguards to our current AI-generated content transparency measures.”

Additionally, TikTok is also launching a new $2 million AI literacy fund and joining the Nonprofit Partnership on AI, which studies and develops best practices for ethical AI.
