Thousands of people took to the streets of the Spanish capital, accusing Sanchez’s leftist government of corruption.
The protesters also demanded early elections.
Who organized the protests in Madrid?
The demonstration was organized by the PP under the leadership of opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijú. At a rally in central Madrid “Mafia or democracy?” The slogan was given.
Participants waved Spanish flags and chanted “Resign now!” Were carrying written signs. and “Sanchez, go away!”
The PP estimated the crowd at around 80,000, while the Interior Ministry put the figure closer to 40,000. The last large-scale protests against Sanchez in the capital took place in June.
In the capital, PP Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida and former PP Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy also addressed the rally.
For what reason did people protest?
Sunday’s demonstrations were triggered by a Supreme Court decision earlier this week ordering the detention before trial of Sanchez’s former transport minister, Jose Luis Abalos, and Koldo Garcia, a former adviser to the minister.
“The situation (in Spain) has become unstable,” Daniel Noguera, an attendee, told the AFP news agency. The 18-year-old student highlighted “prices that keep going up” and said it was becoming more difficult than ever to find a place to live.
In office since 2018, Sánchez has vowed to leave not before the end of the current parliamentary term in 2027.
He has condemned attacks by right-wing parties, which he says are designed to weaken him.
