The Vatican is leaning towards AI. AI-assisted live translations are being offered to attendees of Holy Mass – Holy Masses, if you will. The Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican has teamed up with Translated, a language services provider, to create live translations in 60 languages.
Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, OFM Conv., archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, said in a statement, “For centuries, St. Peter’s Basilica has welcomed the faithful of every nation and language. By providing a tool that helps many people understand the words of the liturgy, we seek to serve the mission that defines the center of the Catholic Church, which is universal by its vocation.” “I am very pleased with the collaboration with Translated. In this centenary year, we look to the future with wisdom and prudence, confident that human ingenuity, when guided by faith, can become an instrument of communion.”
Visitors to the Vatican will have the option to scan a QR code. They will then have access to live audio and text translation of the liturgy. This does not require any app and should work directly on the web page.
This technology stems from Lara, a translation AI tool that was launched in 2024. Translated claims that Lara works with “the sensitivity of over 500,000 native-speaking professional translators”.
