The technology you need to run faster marathons

one thing we talk about a lot The Vergecast This is how to engage with technology without losing your mind. One version of that discussion concerns fitness and the so-called quantified self: What does it take to make exercise work, using the tools and trackers available to you, without letting it dominate your life? This is a fun, complex topic and one we come across often.

However, there is another side to this debate. What if you want the most data, the most insight, the most feedback, the most coaching, whatever it takes to get better, whatever it is? It requires a different set of tools and a different relationship with technology.

Nicholas Thompson, CEO atlantic And author of the new book, Running Ground: A Father, a Son and the Simplest GameSpent years developing that relationship. (he is also a Very Sprinter – the kind who wins the race rather than finishing it.) And on to this episode The VergecastHe describes his approach to running and running technique. He tells us how he uses his Garmin watch, the custom GPT he built to give nutrition and workout advice, and how he experiments with his workouts to figure out what data matters and what doesn’t.

after this, The VergeJohn Higgins joins the show to give some helpful advice ahead of the holiday season. You might be going home for Thanksgiving this week, which means you might need to turn off some motion smoothing – but what is motion smoothing? And why is it always there in the first place? John also helps us decide which frame-style TV to get, how you should customize your new set out of the box, and much more.

Finally, David answers a question from The Vergecast Hotline (call 866-VERGE11 or email Vergecast@theverge.com!) with some follow-ups to a previous question about cheap earbuds. We’ve received lots of recommendations and thought we’d share.
