The Score for ‘Bugonia’ Happened in a Truly Unbelievable Way (Exclusive)

Bugonia exclusive

BugoniaThe new film from director Yorgos Lanthimos is now available at home, and that’s great news for a few reasons. The most obvious thing is that the movie is amazing. Emma Stone plays a CEO who is abducted by two people (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) because they think she is an alien. It’s a twisted, intense story told with a unique whimsy that only Lanthimos can deliver.

The second reason it’s so good Bugonia Now on home you can control the volume. And, let us tell you, its score Bugonia is incredible. It is composed by Gerskin Fendrix, who also scored Lanthimos’ two previous films. types of kindness And bad thingsAnd this is completely strange and unexpected. For a film that’s largely set in one location, the music sometimes soars like a sci-fi space opera. Elsewhere, it’s a 1970s paranoia thriller. Basically, it’s insanely insane, and after watching the clip below it’s easy to understand why.

io9 has an exclusive look at a clip Birth of the Bees: Formation of BugoniaA documentary included in the digital release of the film. In this clip, you’ll understand why Fendrix’s score for the film is so unique. And that’s because he’s got really incredible direction from Lanthimos. Here it is.

As it turned out, Lanthimos didn’t want Fendrix to know anything about the film, didn’t let him read the script, and only gave him three keywords: “bees,” “cellar,” and “spaceship.” So, from this, you’ll start to understand why there are all these different elements in the score.

Earlier this year, io9 spoke with Lanthimos, and, in our conversation, we asked about his relationship with Fendrix and this score in particular. “Well, I knew one thing: that I wanted the music to mostly mesh with the claustrophobic feel of the film and its inherent location aspect,” the director said.

“So the first thing I said to him was [he] Will not read the script of this film. We have worked together with Gerskin on two other films [I didn’t want him to] Read the script. ‘I will give you [three] Keywords to work with. And then you will create the music and I will intuitively guide you here and there. And then I said to him, ‘I think you should write bigger. Think of an orchestra. Make it bigger. Don’t step back.’ Because I wanted the music, as you said, to be so explosive sometimes that it was out of this world. And it worked really well. I mean, I’ve worked with Gerskin before like this. He always prepares the music before I start editing. So I can use the library of music that he created for a specific film.”

“The last time he read the script, [so] I thought we should take it a step further and tell him less this time,” Lanthimos continued. “And I think it worked even better. And he himself says that if he had read the script in advance, he would not have made this musical. So we have come up with this way of working, which is very good. I mean, I have all this beautiful music that I can use while I’m editing. We’d have to roughly cut it to fit the scenes, and then Gerskin would go back and fine-tune it.

Bugonia It is now available wherever you rent or buy movies digitally. This is one of the best of the year.
