The Mac Pro could be the latest addition to Apple’s product purgatory

According to the latest Power On newsletter, the wait for the new Mac Pro could be a lot longer. bloombergMark Gurman of Apple reported that the future of the Mac Pro in Apple’s desktop strategy is uncertain and will not see any improvement until 2026.

According to Gurman, Apple is no longer working on the M4 Ultra chip, which was supposed to be introduced in a refreshed Mac Pro. Instead, according to Gurman, Apple is planning to make the M5 Ultra its “high-end desktop chip”, which so far will only be available on the Mac Studio.

Despite earning a solid reputation among creatives looking for a Mac desktop, the Mac Pro has fallen out of favor after sporadic refreshes between 2013 and 2023. Apple experimented with some risky redesigns, including the “trash can” style, but the current Mac Pro models have returned to a modern cheese grater look, upgrading to Apple silicon with the M2 Ultra chip. However, Apple customers wanting the most powerful desktop option may be more likely to choose the latest Mac Studio with the M4 Ultra. Gurman also revealed that Apple is internally shifting toward Mac Studio as the focus of Apple’s professional desktop offerings.
