The launch of the AI image editing feature on XAI’s Grok has caused chaos on X as it was used to generate a flood of non-consensual sexual deepfakes. As Hayden Field wrote, “Screenshots show Grok complying with requests to have real women wear lingerie and spread their legs, and to make small children wear bikinis.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called deepfakes “disgusting” and said, “X needs to be done.”[s] To get your act together and get this stuff down. “And we will take action because it is intolerable.” X has restricted the feature a bit by requiring a paid subscription to generate images by tagging Grok on X, but the AI image editor otherwise remains freely available.
