The Ivalice Chronicles is a classic still worth the challenge

Square Enix loves to remaster, remake, and reimagine their RPGs. The latest title to get the treatment is the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy spin-off, Final Fantasy Tactics.

device It has had its own remakes before war of lions Bringing the game to PlayStation Portable and, eventually, iOS and Android. However, now across all major consoles, Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles This is again a different remake – and even some of the characters and extras from War of the Lions are discarded. I never finished either version, and two things are clear: I missed it, and it’s hard.

Originally released just a few months later final fantasy vii, which introduced polygonal characters, FMV and more, device‘The sprite aesthetic seemed quaint in comparison. With compact isometric levels, turn-based battles are closer Tactics Ogre And Disgaea Compared to the lineups and strike battles of mainline Final Fantasy games at the time. The game was a critical hit, even though it did not match the popularity of Cloud et al.

device Very little forgiving. The dynamics of battle depend heavily on random number generation; Your squad is often outnumbered, and you can be easily eliminated when resurrection spells and defensive magic fail. The first time my revival spell failed, I swore out loud on my Switch 2. But the taste of defeat? It is usually seasoned just right. This is gaming umami.

I wanted more, even with the notorious difficulty increase in the fight against the knight-errant Wigraph. In this battle, I single-handedly faced a warrior much more powerful than him and died about 20 times in a row. On standard difficulty, you rarely have to do this, but I had to create a special version of the hero that could hit hard, heal himself, and generally survive long enough for the second phase of this fight.

Ivalice Chronicles Can be played in two ways. The modern version includes high-resolution sprites, backgrounds and effects, which can be rotated and tilted for the best view of the action, while retaining the isometric view of the original. There’s an HD-2D node with thick depth of field blur to add a more modern feel.

If you want yours device Pixelated, you can play the original version, although you can’t transition between the two, which feels like a missed opportunity. (You can toggle your saves to versions of other RPGs with similar dual versions, e.g. Dragon Quest XI S,

However, more than the graphical downgrade, you’re missing out on sophisticated voice acting, which not only enhances the diorama cutscenes and political intrigue, but also instigates battles as you field the main characters and they unleash some job class attacks.

If we talk about jobs device‘The system remains the same, with basic jobs like Knight, White Knight, and Freelancer being replaced by quirky-but-powerful roles like Dragoons, Summoners, and much later, Arithmeticians (the power of math!) and Ninjas.

difficulty curve of device There is too much here. It was embarrassing how much I struggled to overcome the spikes in difficulty, but still, I never completed the original. (And, like a true hero, I refused to research broken job builds or easy grind spots.)

You can grind, level up your characters, earn money and get important action points. But the wisest approach is to figure out a battle loop where your characters repeat actions. When the character attacks, heals, steals and generally does anything other than simply move or stand still, he earns job points. These are the most important parts of developing your squad, as abilities and passive skills can be transferred between jobs; This way you can customize your entire party to take down certain types of enemies. Lots of archers? A skill called Archer’s Bane means they will struggle to get hits. Lots of slow moving enemies in a tight space, raining hell with your summoner, but having the ability to regain MP as they move around.

Sometimes, it still feels like a chore to replay battles and rack up enough JP for that skill that you know will turn the tide of a challenging fight. Luckily, a new battle speed toggle makes them a little less sluggish.

It’s weird to feel nostalgic about a game I never played in the first place. But there’s something familiar and comfortable final fantasy strategyI’m amazed by the depth of what at first appears to be a very simple combat system,

While the voice acting and additional quality of life upgrades are great, it’s a shame that Square Enix didn’t include additional jobs (and characters) introduced in other iterations, like the PSP version. Still, this is another great tactical RPG for the Nintendo Switch, which is the best place to play this genre. However, fortunately, it is also available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
