The Foldable iPhone Might Be More Android-Like Than iPad

New information about Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone has emerged from none other than well-known Apple observer Mark Gurman.

In a new report from Bloomberg, Gurman shared information about how Apple’s foldable iPhone will reportedly work. Expected to launch in the autumn alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, Apple’s first foldable phone will reportedly feature multitasking capabilities similar to Android book-style foldables like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Gurman said the device will run iOS and not the iPad’s more robust iPadOS, which got an overhaul of its multitasking features in iPadOS 26. The software update added resizable app windows and a menu bar for quick access to app settings — features designed to make the iPad work more like a Mac running macOS.

Unfortunately, those well-received iPad multitasking features won’t be coming to the foldable iPhone. According to the report, instead, the device will have a “simple multitasking system” that will be able to show two apps simultaneously “similar to the split-screen mode on Android foldables.” I’ve had good experiences with split-screen app mode on Android foldables, so the bar is pretty low for Apple to clear.

Limiting the foldable iPhone’s multitasking to two apps at once is likely a way to deter iPad sales. Still, it’s a bummer that an iPad Mini can run at least three apps with resizable windows and a foldable iPhone can’t.

Gurman also said that developers will be able to “add a sidebar to the left edge of the screen” to their iPhone apps to take advantage of the larger folding display. Apple has been pushing the sidebar as a feature in its redesigned iPad apps for years. It’s a nice way to have more app settings at your fingertips, but it feels very uncreative.

The report also includes other things we’ve heard about before. The foldable iPhone will be smaller than most iPhones when closed and the internal screen will have a widescreen aspect ratio that is better suited for video. The outer screen will have a hole-punch camera that supports dynamic island; The internal screen will also feature a hole-punch camera, and not the previously rumored in-display camera. There is no Face ID, but there will be Touch ID in the side button. The foldable display will have a less visible crease in the middle, but it will not be eliminated completely.

Another prolific leaker, Sonny Dixon, shared images of 3D CAD files for the foldable iPhone.

The images give you a sense of the device’s smaller and squatter dimensions when closed, and its wider footprint when open.

That said, the foldable iPhone is becoming more real with every leak.
