After selling its popular weather app to Apple in March 2020, where some of its core features were incorporated into Apple Weather, the creators of Dark Sky have left Apple to create another alternative. Their new app, called Acme Weather, acknowledges the fact that forecasts will never be completely accurate by providing a main forecast of the day’s conditions and several alternative predictions.
Acme Weather is currently only available for iOS. An Android version is planned, but there is no release timeline yet. You can try it for two weeks for free, but if you like what you see and want to keep using it, a $25 annual subscription will be required. Dark Sky cost $3.99 when it was a third-party app, but the creators of Acme Weather claim that their new app will provide better forecasts and more weather information than Dark Sky, which is derived from satellite data, ground station observations, and radar data.
Alternative forecasts will be presented as a series of lines alongside the primary forecast, showing how conditions may evolve throughout the day. When alternative forecast lines are grouped together, it is a sign that the primary forecast is reliable. When there is a wide spread between predictions, the forecast may be more likely to change throughout the day.
To expand the information available through the app during active weather events, Acme Weather also allows users to report conditions where they are located, which appear as simple icons on the map. Community-reported conditions include radar, lightning, rain and snow amounts, wind, temperature, humidity, storm tracks, and other maps of cloud cover, with forecasts based on their relevance to projected conditions.
Dark Sky was known for its excellent notifications, which is another feature being carried forward with Acme Weather. The new app will provide user-customizable notifications that could include “minute-by-minute rainfall warnings,” government-issued severe weather warnings, nearby lightning activity and even when you might be able to see a rainbow in your location.
