The Ashes: Ben Stokes says calling England arrogant is ‘too far’

Four sessions after the first Test, England had given themselves an excellent opportunity. At the score of 65-1 in their second innings, the visiting team had a lead of 105 runs.

But England lost their last nine wickets for 99 runs, including a disastrous spell of 3–0 when Ollie Pope, Harry Brook and Joe Root were all out driving on the ball.

This defeat has raised more questions on England’s attacking style. Although Stokes pointed to the aggression of Australia’s Travis Head, who scored the second-fastest century in Ashes history to lead the home team to victory, the England captain admitted his team could have been “much better”.

“The important thing we need to do as a team and as individuals is learn from this,” Stokes said. “We have identified those moments and talked about them as a group.

“In terms of execution, could we have been better at executing what we wanted to do? Absolutely.

“Sometimes when you go out there and make a decision, it’s not always beneficial, or doesn’t work out the way you want. That’s what’s important for the rest of this tour, to stay true to our belief in how we play our cricket, but we also know we could have been much better in some ways.”

When Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took over in 2022, England had won only one of their last 17 Test matches.

The surge in results and the captivating style of cricket has reignited a connection with supporters, a connection that has been tested over the past week. Many of those traveling to Perth spent large sums to watch England lose the first two-day Ashes Test in 104 years.

“We know a lot of fans will be disappointed after that first loss,” Stokes said. But it is a five-match series, we have to play four matches.

“We’ve lost the first one – we’re absolutely desperate to get home with that goal in mind before we start the series, which is to win the Ashes, and are doing absolutely everything within our powers and making the best use of our time to allow us to go out there and try and achieve that goal.”
