Wednesday

Major airports that may be affected: Boston, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Seattle (late)

Rain may continue in the east: For the peak day of travel, at least parts of the East may see rain before the cold moves in, causing delays to some flights, with the greatest chances expected at major Northeast hubs.

Ice in the Great Lakes: Winter Storm Alston will continue to bring heavy snow and blizzard conditions through at least the morning hours to the Upper Mississippi Valley, including the Alston Twin Cities metro area, causing difficult morning commutes and possible flight delays out of MSP International Airport. Snow and wind will also spread across much of Wisconsin, with light accumulations possible south of the Madison-Milwaukee corridor that could make some roads slippery. Note that high winds can cause blowing snow and maintain blizzard conditions even when no new snow is falling.

Otherwise, heavy lake-effect snow and high winds will spread from the western Great Lakes Snowbelt (northern and western Michigan, northern Wisconsin) into the eastern Lakes Snowbelt (northeast Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania, southwest New York, Upstate New York) Wednesday night. Expect dangerous travel in these areas.

North West Troubles: A few patches of mainly morning snow may cover parts of the northern Rockies. And some rain is possible in the Pacific Northwest, with the possibility of persistent rain overnight in Western Washington, including Seattle.

black Friday

Major airports that may be affected: Dallas-Ft. Worth (late), Houston (late), Kansas City (late)

Another day of lake-effect snowfall: Lake-effect snowbands will persist, primarily in the eastern Great Lakes snowbelt, with the potential for hazardous travel. A few other scattered snow showers are possible across northern New England.

More Northern Plains Snow: The snow will extend from Montana across the Northern Plains to the Dakotas and into the Missouri Valley. Friday night, that snow could spread into parts of the Upper Midwest.

More southerly storms: Rain and storms are possible Friday afternoon and night from Kansas and western Missouri to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and western Louisiana. Some of them may result in heavy rainfall and nighttime flight delays at major airports in Texas.

Saturday

Major airports that may be affected: Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, Kansas City, Minneapolis

Midwest Winter Mess: Snow, and possibly some sleet and freezing rain, will move through the Mississippi Valley and parts of the Great Lakes. This could cause slicks and flight delays on roads including Chicago-O’Hare, St. Louis, Detroit and Kansas City.

South Storm: The storm, along with heavy rainfall and possibly some severe weather, could drop thunderstorms across the South from Oklahoma and Texas to the lower Mississippi Valley. This could cause local flooding and flight delays at both the Dallas-Ft. Worth and Houston. These areas are still submerged, so any new rainfall is not welcome.

This forecast is still uncertainty Now. The map above shows our current forecast and what we write below is our best guess at the forecast right now. Check back with us at Weather.com for the latest forecast updates in the coming days as this forecast comes into focus.

Major airports that may be affected: Atlanta, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Houston, New Orleans, Washington, DC

Eastern Disturbance: Most computer model forecasts show rain will reach the East, with some snowfall possible across parts of the interior Northeast and lake-effect snowbands across the western Great Lakes. This could cause significant flight delays in major East Coast hubs. Rain could extend into the Southeast and even parts of the Gulf Coast, so those traveling in or out of Atlanta, Houston and New Orleans will need to keep that in mind. Some models also have the potential for rain and storms across much of Florida, which will become more certain as the weekend approaches.

Rock Ice: Some snow may develop in the central and southern Rockies and adjacent High Plains from Colorado and western Kansas to northern New Mexico. Some rainfall is possible as far west as Arizona.
