Tecno just unveiled a ridiculously thin modular smartphone concept design

Tecno unveiled something very interesting at MWC 2026. The most striking feature here is probably its size. Most modular smartphone concepts start out heavy and only get heavier once accessories are added. Tecno’s base smartphone is just 4.9mm thin, which is thinner than a pencil.

Of course, the size increases with each attached module. However, snapping on the power bank module brings the thickness down to par with a standard modern smartphone. Another key feature here is how these various modular components snap together. Techno has developed new interconnection technology that uses both magnets and pin connectors. This will make it easier to both add and remove components.

The company says that this phone has been designed to grow with the user through hardware expansion. For this purpose, Tecno has developed 10 modules. There are various camera lenses and some that look like a dedicated gaming controller.

While magnets are for connecting, pin connectors aid in power delivery. Data transmission between the phone and the module is handled wirelessly, with the ability to switch between Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mmWave depending on where the user is located.

There are two colorways for both the phone and its ecosystem of accessories. There’s a silver-aluminum version and a nice-looking gray version. It doesn’t matter to actual consumers because, well, it’s just a concept design. It looks like the company’s magnetic attachment technology may make it into some physical products in the future.

Techno has always been a company that marches to the beat of its own drum. It has developed a model with one, one with and a foldable with one.

The industry has not yet embraced modular smartphones, even though there have been some great concept designs. Google is more than a decade old, and the same can be said about it that it has never seen the light of day.

Some modular phones have been released in the real world, but they were not as ambitious as Tecno’s concept. LG launches a semi-modular phone, but it. Motos have also been released, but they haven’t set the world on fire.
