Stranded astronaut finds an alien ally in Project Hail Mary trailer

Big holiday releases are still waiting in the wings, but it’s not too early to anticipate what’s to come in 2026. Amazon MGM Studios has released a new trailer for its upcoming space odyssey Project Hail Marywhich is based on Andy Weir (Martian) The best-selling novel of 2021 about a biologist-turned-schoolteacher with amnesia in space.

Weir told The New York Times that the inspiration for his novel came from a planned multi-book space opera zek After which he started writing MartianAbout potential fuels for interstellar travel. He eventually abandoned that effort and wrote the 2017 novel, ArtemisInstead of, but aspects of zek found my way in Project Hail Mary Novel.

As we previously reported, Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights to Weir’s novel before it was published and brought on Drew Goddard to write the screenplay. (Godard also wrote the adapted screenplay for MartianSo he’s an excellent choice.) The studio tapped Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie) to direct and signed Ryan Gosling to star. According to official basis:

Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memories return, he begins to uncover his mission: to solve the mystery of the mysterious substance that caused the sun to die. She must use her scientific knowledge and unconventional ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means she won’t have to do it alone.

In addition to Gosling, the cast includes Sandra Huller as the head of the Hail Mary project and Ryland’s superior; Milana Vayntrub as Project astronaut Olesya Ilyukhina; Ken Leung as Project astronaut Yao Li-ji; Liz Kingsman as Shapiro; Orion Lee as She; And James Ortiz names Ryland as Rocky, a new life form.
