Original toy Story It turned 30 years old earlier this week, and to mark the occasion, the Steve Jobs Archive released a never-before-seen interview where the late Apple co-founder (and majority shareholder) talks about Pixar’s then-upcoming debut feature.
In the 22-minute interview, which took place a full year after the film’s release, Jobs discussed helping foster an environment where Pixar employees could thrive and were inspired to ,work together as teammates., To them, Pixar is the only place that can hire ,very good, workers from Hollywood and Silicon Valley cultures and be successful. ,[We’re] It’s a very exciting place to be at the moment,” he boasted, citing the growing number of employees at the studio and the need to keep the staff and quality of work consistent.
He also talks about adopting a Silicon Valley-like model for employee retention, while saying that in true Disney style, Pixar needs to be a company “that no one will want to leave. We don’t take anyone for granted, because if they don’t want to be here, they should probably leave anyway, whether they have a contract or not.”
During the interview, Jobs said that Pixar was doing so well at the time that it became the first non-internal studio Disney approached for animation – a collaboration he spoke highly of. With access to resources and guidance that Disney was not sharing (or selling) with its peers, Pixar adopted Disney’s method of “editing your film before making it”, refining that and other techniques for itself. Relations with Disney were going very well at the time, with Jobs openly speculating whether the studio would work with Disney again after the initial three-picture deal ended – he mentioned a second project, codenamed “Bugs”, would happen later.
