This feature is not brand new, it was built from the ground up. Instead, it has a direct integration with TuneMyMusic, letting you shuttle playlists between services like Tidal, YouTube Music, Qobuz, Beatport, and even Napster. Of course, TuneMyMusic is just one of several services that offer similar capabilities, including SoundEase and SongShift, which power Apple Music’s import feature.
Although you can go directly to these third parties to transfer playlists between services, often, there are limits on how many playlists and how long they can remain on the free tier. Going direct through Spotify and Apple gives you the full premium, unlimited transfer experience, even if only in one direction. The ability to transfer your playlists directly from within the Spotify mobile app is now becoming available globally.
